You bought a gorgeous dress online, waited over a week for it in the mail; it finally arrives and it just does nothing for your figure! Instead of having to return it, here are some ways you can style your dress to make it a fabulous flattering fit! (I’m really feeling the f-words today LOL).
This is what my dress started as. It is just hanging like a trash bag on my body despite it being a beautiful dress! In order to make it flattering for my figure I grabbed my favorite belt (any belt will work). I will link mine and some dupes below.
The first step to styling the belt and fixing the frumpy mess is to tie the belt around the smallest part of your waist. If you put the belt too low, your figure will look really straight and stalky, kind of like a tall rectangle. If you put the belt too high, your torso will look really short and it can accentuate your stomach. Obviously, that being said, there are no rules in fashion, so wear what makes you happy and comfortable.
Once you’ve placed your belt where you like it, you want to make sure there is some looser fabric on top so the belt doesn’t look too tight or like it’s pulling on the fabric. You can achieve this by grabbing some of the fabric above the belt and pulling it upwards gently. You want to be sure that you’re pulling the fabric up in areas that are the most flattering. If I pull up from the sides but not the front, it makes me look wider than I am. Play around with this and find style that looks best for you.
You can stop here with a great outfit, but a fun trick a lot of people don’t think to do is hide your belt. I know…you just bought this amazing belt and now we’re hiding it? Well it really creates a whole new dress! If you pull up the fabric enough to lay over and cover the belt it looks like the dress was built this way and makes it really flattering on many figures. This is also great if your dress is too long like mine was! This is also such a great tip if you have a belt that doesn’t go with the dress, but you still want to make the fit more flattering.
